Notts Scots

History

After playing together for a while around 1932 a group of Scots made up of Doctors, Dentists,and Solicitors and members of Hollinwell, Sherwood and Wollaton founded the society in 1934. The founding members were A.D.Phillips, Robin Wood, James Bell, James Scott, Peter Ormiston, R.R. Thompson, and A. McMeeking.

5 of our Trophies bear the name of founder members including the James Bell and James Scott (both 1934) and Phillips (1935).

Our Presidents Trophy and and before that the Presidents Salvers have always been played for at Hollinwell and we are the only Society to play there on a Sunday! There is only one knockout competition the Thirteen Trophy presented by 13 Doctors, our annual invitation day is at Woodhall Spa. We have a annual match with the Irish Graduates that in the days before the breathalyser was played at Hollinwell, it was apparently not uncommon for Gerry Fitzgerald Lou O'Shea, Bob Boland and a few others to finish this match at first light 3.30am have breakfast and then go off to morning surgery.

The first annual dinner was held in 1952 at the Milton's Head Hotel. It moved to Daybrook House in 1953 and continued there until 1983 when it transferred to the Regency Rooms Ilkeston and is still held there now, in year 2005 we had as our guest speaker Gavin Hastings OBE, our Presidents Dinner & Dance is held in February at Beeston Fields, and our Golf Season starts at Holinwell in April we play trophy's every month till the end season Dinner at Stanton on the Wolds Golf Club in October.

The Nottingham & District Scottish Golf Society was founded over 70 years ago, since when many strong and lasting friendships have been made on and off the golf course.
