On a sunny 17th September 2003 Wednesday afternoon, George McLeod and myself were the partners with Ian Garden in the James Scott Trophy at Beeston Fields Golf Club, after scoring a blank on the 13th hole Ian and I walked to the 14th tee, me with a driver in my hand only to be told by Ian it's a par 3 and it's a bit daunting, Ian was hesitating about his choice of club, I thought 148yds a 8 Iron, when as in a message from above, Ian pulled from his golf bag only what can be described as a magic wand, a trusty 9 metal he called it, gripping the left hand down at the end of the rubber, right hand on the steel shaft, crouching down he swung and we watched the ball drop through the sun on to the green and disappear, moving down to the green in haste George and I forgot that we were still in a match and blew up and scored nil, Ian walked round the back of the green while George and I were rushing to the pin, and there in the hole was Ian's golf ball, it was a truly magnificent shot and a pleasure to witness, a bottle of whisky was shared by all,and Ian hopes it's not 60 years till the next hole in one.
